The First World War - The First Russian Revolution
The first world war was an internisine european struggle. It didn't make a lot of sense, even to some of the participants. But two things happened in 19 17 that completely changed the character of the war and turned it into a genuinely global war. The russian revolution replaced the czar with an attempt to establish something like a constitutional, liberal democracy. And when it collapsed, britain and france and russia could all claim to be finally, not just on the same side in the war, but on thesame side in politics. That attracted the attention of the world's greatest democracy, the united states of america.
