Why the United States Should Keep Its Capabilities Intact

The U.S. aircraft carrier fleet is such a potent symbol of American power that to lose one would be a massive blow, says CNN's John Defterios. As long as the fleet is intact, it has some deterrent value for future scenarios, he adds. There tends to be an assumption that the United States will lose enormous credibility among its other allies in Asia if it refuses to fight on Taiwan's side against any Chinese military action,. But I think there's also a way to make the opposite argument, which is to say that Japan and Korea and maybe even Australia would say well, better that the US keeps its power to dry for us rather than for Taiwan.
