Philosopher Epicurus says we should avoid pleasures that will bring us pain in the long run. He advises against sex, overeating and getting drunk because they lead to stomach aches later. But he also cautions not to engage in day-to-day political life as it brings anxiety rather than pleasure. In his letter on ethics, Epicurus memorably says: "I am deeply convinced that pleasure is indeed the good"
