The Importance of the Panama Canal
Robin Harding is Professor of International Relations at the University of Miami, an author of the history of Panama. The regional reason for the canal was to shorten the distance between the two oceans. Teddy Roosevelt had famously said that the Caribbean was a quote unquote American lake and needed to protect its southern flank. It was critical from the standpoint of the US Navy to be able to move warships from the Pacific to the Atlantic without having to have double the number of warships.
