Under Bretton Woods, all of the other foreign currencies from the nations that were participants in Bretton Woods were actually pegged to the dollar and the dollar was pegged to gold. The United States had quite an unfair senior age advantage in terms of their ability to create new wealth by issuing new paper money. And then obviously everybody kind of cheats in the system like that too. But it's not really too much different than our system today. It's just that now the paper isn't redeemable for anything.
