The Enlightenment is when you start to see the rise of scientific thinking. The thing that I think is specifically humanistic about that is that it's having a belief in the power of that to improve human lives, to improve human well-being. So one of the figures that leaps out in that is Voltaire, who really believed that we should do everything that we can to make suffering less widespread.
