In a slave society, the rewards to figuring out how to control people are highly likely to be much higher than the ards to figure out how to make stuff better and more efficiently. You get this strong bias toward pretation, an exploitation, what will bommel used to call destructive enterprentership. Plus, you get an upper class that can only justify its existence by saying that it exists to work, because working is something that is doom,. That kind of makes you fit only for servitude. There's an awful lot of truth in that.
