There have always been people on different sides of the spectrum. The fi councils tend to be more pragmatist and therefore more willing to stray outside their schools. Most people are strictly hanafy in prayer, zacat and so forth, but less strictly hanAFy when it comes to rulings of trade, marriage,. those types of things. For 90% of muslims, they don't follow the rules because they've never studied a hanepy text. All you're doing is following the expert opinion that's given by your society. You can't really properly call yourself an amn if you haven't learnt how to pray as well as learn about social transactions
