By the mid nineteenth century, by ase after the civil war, we have a great many episcopal congregations. But these are all in churches. There is no cathedral,. Although there has been talk of a cathedral since the 18 twenties. The subject didn't really come up again until about 50 years later when the bishop at the time, horatio potter, announced plans to build a cathedral farther north on land. Get this, between 50 seventh and 50 ninth street and between six and seventh avenues, right off central park which was brand new.
