In 1984, Jan Goodwin went to Pakistan to do a story for ladies home journal on what life was like for Afghan women refugees. What she saw in those camps stuck with her for the rest of her life. The children had been maimed and frequently blinded because they had picked up the small anti-personnel mines, many disguised as brightly colored toys. In their depopulation campaign, the Soviet army dropped hundreds of thousands of what are called butterfly mines.
