Nixon doesn't really bear the marks of the place he comes from, or he doesn't have a flavor of it. He is shaped entirely by this Protestant work ethic kind of individualist thing that was prevalent in his upbringing. It's funny that Reagan ends up embodying California so much more than Nixon, right? I feel like wills does a good job of pointing to the way that Nixon somehow, and in a way that makes him an unattractive political candidate.
