Cold water immersion may attenuate acute changes in satellite cell numbers and the activity of what are called kinases that regulate muscle growth, also known as hypertrophy. The researchers concluded that the use of cold water immersion as a regular post-exercise recovery strategy should be reconsidered. Icing studies that use a relatively minimal amount of exercise to argue that icing doesn't work simply do not translate into real world environments for hard charging athletes or consistent exercise enthusiasts.
