Derek Abbott is a professor in the electrical and electronic engineering department at the University of Adelaide. He thought trying to figure out the code using statistical tests could be an interesting project for his students. Derek decided to try and find the woman whose number had been in the book. The police had never published her name, but there was enough information in the papers that you could work it out. She lived very close by and the newspapers actually said which hospitals she had trained in as a nurse. And I eventually found out her name was Joe Thompson. But Joe Thompson had died about two years earlier so Derek decided to find out if she had any children. So I found out that she had a son
