The Architecture of the Moschee in Britain
In my project for the redevelopment of Fokston Mosque, I wanted to explore further and find a language for this process of reinvention. We carried out workshops with local children who attended the mosque and we took walks along the seafront and collected objects. From these the children made drawings and prints and from these I developed new types of pattern. This was my attempt to try and place a new type of Islamic pattern which follows the structure of traditional geometries but is derived from the real lives of the mosque and communities. It's an instrument through which the migrant processes their experience of dislocation,. projecting onto the mosque totemic objects, signs and symbols which represent lost worlds and arrested futures.
