Rat Simulaho and the Betsimiseraka Confederation
The Betsimiseraka confederation seems to have been founded after some years of warfare in about 1720 by a young man called Rat Simulaho, whose father was an English pirate captain. He ruled till about 1750, dies in 1750, and after that the whole thing starts to kind of dissolve. But what exactly happened isn't particularly clear, and that's really the subject of the book - trying to find out what sort of political experiment was taking place on the northwest coast of Madagascar.
