i was forced in gasne province to sleep with the women and children in a different part of the house completely. i obviously couldn't speak darri or pashto, but i would write down a few phrases  and record a few phrases. And you only speak like six lang and so i was basically just talking to them, not understanding half of what they were telling me. Although at one point a son came in who did speak some english. So i was able to really get sense of these women's experiences,. which in many ways was like a huge blessing and really informed my reporting.
