Math separates into two subfields. Some of them have very complicated objects, and then you prove relatively simple theorems about them. So I was pretty underwhelmed by the potential impact of the things that were being studied. And so I ended up switching halfway through my PhD to be in the computer science department - which meant doing all of the requirements again from scratch.
