The Origins of Orphic Religion in Athens

There were in fifth century Athens at least, a group of people who considered Orpheus as somehow their culture hero or spiritual master. The precise nature of rituals that he founded seems bewilderingly complex. But we shall return to the question of Orphic religion and rites in the next episode.
