What's Changed in Manufacturing?

We have far fewer people working in manufacturing now than we did in the 19 fifties, 19 sixties. What's happened is a deliberate state strategy to disinvest from low value manufacturing. Retail and hospitality are the two huge ones. They account for a huge proportion of our work force now. The obvious immediate feature between those two kinds of jobs is that the manufacturing jobs were, for a long time, very male dominated. And of course, the care work, the work, the hospitality work, is highly female dominated. We don't tend to make the sort of low quality, low value items that tends to be done in countries like china these days.
