Settled civilizations and nomadic peoples have clashed throughout history. How is it that we have these two vastly different lifestyles emerge in the same species? It comes down to one of the fundamental contrasts within the Eurasian continent within the Eurasian landmass again. The steps are much more arid which means you cannot effectively grow enough food for yourself by using agriculture but it does support very well an alternative mode of life called nomadic pastoralism i.e. hurting huge numbers of goats or sheep or cattle eating the grasswhich humans cannot eat themselves.
I interview award-winning astrobiologist and science writer Lewis Dartnell. We discuss themes from his most recent book, Origins: How The Earth Made Us, as well as ideas from his field of study, astrobiology. Dr. Dartnell holds the Professorship in Science Communication at the University of Westminster. Interview topics include: how the Earth's cycles may have driven human evolution, humanity's search for extraterrestrial life, the shadow biosphere, why some civilizations came to dominate the globe, and more.
