When you put a mask up close to your mouth, then the material can interfere just with your lip movement. The second and more important problem is that you sound like you because of your oral cavity. So when you put on a mask, it sounds muddy. And it sounds muddy because you've lost all those overtones of those higher harmonics. You haven't lost them, they're just down much, much slower than they should be. If if you don't mind the anthropomorphizing e sound, and so you sound different.
