Chainalysis by late 2016 and 2017 has figured out basically how to map out Alpha Bay's Bitcoin addresses across the blockchain. But within that, it's still very difficult to identify like any single person's transactions. Two FBI agents in Washington, DC, had this idea of looking at those exit scams where the boss of a dark web drug market just steals everybody's money and runs off of it. So they try this technique and they kind of comb through all those Alpha Bay addresses and finds several sums. They think it's almost like too good to be true. Maybe somebody is setting up this guy cause to look like Alpha O2 even. Or really dumb.
