Perkins grew up picking cotton for pennies an hour in order to help his family survive. He was a massive fan of the inventor of bluegrass Bill Monroe, who sang high and drove how many felt songs of longing. When Perkins had learned to play the guitar well enough to play the lead, he taught his brother Jay to play rudimentary rhythm parts. The two brothers had slightly different tastes in country music.
