The way which people are treated depends on their social status. The normans, at least with their high status enemies, they take them prisoner for the most part. People of low status get treated very badly indeed. When william takes a place it is not uncommon for him to hack off the hands of people whoave defended it. But for the high status people, they are taken as prisoners, and they get to live their lives as prisoners in a certain degree of comfort.
