The McDonald's in Ulster

Thomas Radcliffe was appointed as governor of Ireland in 1556. Sussex favoured an aggressive assertion of monarch's rights in Ireland. Shayno Neil sought to enhance his power in Ulster, north of the island. Parts of Ulster were also being settled by Scots from western Isles. The reason why the McDonald's had started to settle in the area is a bit obscure but possibly encouraged by the marriage of a McDonald to the Bissits supporters of the dominant Ulster O'Neill clan.
