The actual Davidic lineage, which would be necessary through the father to be considered the king of Israel, was the lineage of Joseph from David. And that's what both Matthew in chapter one and Luke in chapter three point out. So Jesus was legitimately the son of Joseph, if adoptively, in terms of the Davidic lineage by which he was recognized as the son of David.
