The Herd Mentality of VCs

I was surprised to see that there is like really this dynamic of oh there's one deal that's really hot and everyone wants it and then VCs fight over it. And often because they're forced to rush they can't overlook things which otherwise they shouldn't be overlooking. But is that because most VCs are mediocre because you would only follow the herd if you don't back yourself? Yeah yeah I mean there's a different way to look at it  and we see that across all types of investing not just VC. Very few who really build the conviction have the thesis that they really know and understand and care about and invest based on that.
