We want to be in a relationship where these things are not just tolerated, but held with compassion. If someone is chronically am either disinterested or chronically uncaring then we have enabled that behaviour. In the beginning of dating, we feel like there are real stakes. You can't then get into a relationship and remove all the stakes. It does mean that there has to be consequences over time to someone no longer showing up as their best.
