The Liberal Democrats' Progress in the by-Election
By-elections are easier to fight a local campaign. Ullis had more resonance in Uxbridge than it would have done in a general election. But equally, of course, this is a problem for the Democrats. They've been fighting it not just for weeks, but for months because they expected the by-election to happen eventually. Now you can do that in a by-election. And we know from history the Democrats in particular can, as a result, produce some perspective of victories. translating that into a general election again - much more difficult.
