Steven Spielberg and the 8 Millimeter Film Festival
I made these films when I was a kid, and then around when I was 12 or 13, I grew up in Los Angeles. And there was a local cable access channel where people could put on their own television shows. Gerard Ravelle had this program called Air Your Shorts. He discovered that the people who were calling his show were all kids like us. We ended up doing a film festival at the New Art Theatre in West LA showing all the 8 millimeter films. Then weirdly, it was written up in the LA Times and Steven Spielberg saw that and thought, that's what I did as a kid.
