The Birth of a Peasant in Russia
Russia's leader is the czar at the time of ulanov's birth, alexander the second. In 18 61 he emancipated the serfs - bonded peasants who could be bought and sold. 23 million of them were given new freedoms to own land and businesses. Other reforms followed but these have barely scratched the surface of russia's inequality.
