Michael Wolraich: Free riding takes lots of different forms, but at heart it's a form of enjoying a benefit without contributing to the production of that benefit. So if cooperation is so important and some people are free riding, how do we get them to stop? He says punishment is a high risk strategy for trying to solicit cooperation because it can quite often prompt retaliation rather than cooperation.
