GPT or any large language model is just manipulating symbols according to some rules, but has no grasp of the meanings. The computer, you don't understand the semantics of those symbols. You don't understand what those symbols mean. And if we can get a grip on that, then we canget a grip on when it would be justifiable to attribute understanding or intelligence to a machine.
