The Moral Panic of the First World War
During the First World War, sexually transmitted infections (V.D.) became a huge problem in Britain and France. The British Army hospitalised 450,000 people with V.D. during the war. In 1939, Monty Python's character wrote a memo to his officers about how they should deal with this epidemic of STIs at home. He told them: 'Should they seek horizontal refreshment? Right? This is what we need to do' It caused a moral panic that led to calls for him to be fired by other top military leaders.
