Isaiah Berlin: The Patron Saint of Untiediness

You knew Isaiah Berlin personally for something like 25 years. What kind of a man was he? Well that's one of the things that's so marvelous about him was that he was, as so many people agree, an absolutely terrific human being. He was unlike anybody else I've ever met. First of all, he was the patron saint of untiediness. And it was terrifically difficult to pin him down to a narrow line of inquiry when you were talking to him. His judgment was very good in the field of human relations and he didn't distort people to suit his preconceptions.
