In 1967, Freeman was visited by Helen Mortensen, one of his earliest patients. She had received two lobotomies from Freeman, one in 1946 and one in 1956 after a relapse. In 1967, she relapsed again, likely as a result of her brain repairing itself. This was conducted at Herach Memorial Hospital in Berkeley, California. And unfortunately for Helenmortensen, Walter severed a blood vessel in her brain,. She died three days later from the operation, and Freeman's surgical privileges were revoked.
