Darius and the Persians in the Aegean
It's likely that Darius received good intelligence from the Ionian Greeks, and thus decided meticulous planning was needed before he attempted to invade Greece. Also, Darius may have also believed that time was firmly on his side. As powerful pro-Persian factions were forming, convinced of the inevitability and desirability of Persian rule. Given time, he may have believed that all of Greece might drop into his hand without lifting a finger.
