The Second High German Sound Shift
In the 5th and 6th centuries, Germanic tribes poured into formerly Roman territory in Western Europe. Under Grimm's Law, many of the Indo-European P sounds had shifted to F sounds. These changes were taking place around the same time that the Anglo-Saxon dialects were emerging as a distinct language up in Britain.
