The History of the P and B Sounds in English
John Hart wanted a phonetic spelling system where there were no silent letters. He said the P should be dropped in that word, and it was eventually lost over time. A B sound was once very common in English, but it's disappeared over time. In all, those sounds have been relatively stable throughout the history of English.
