A hearing takes place, evidence is presented, and a judge decides whether a dangerous offender designation should be imposed. From 1978 to 2020, there have been 1,014 dangerous offender designations made in Canada. There are 860 active dangerous offenders in Canada, 662 with indeterminate sentences and 198 with determinate sentences.
