Cesan wanted the establishment to take him seriously, and was devastated when they didn't. The deliberateness of his work suggests a stab at timelessness. In trying to make sense of this otherwise unremarkable still life, we experience this frustrating sense of resistance even as the luscious colors and benign subject matter are inviting us in.
