Hess's Star Dimmed During World War II

Hitler tolerated Hess's eccentricities, but only up to a point. Around the time World War II started in 1939, Hess's star was beginning to dim. Hitler made Hess second in line to succeed him after Hermann Gorek. He also told Hess not to do any more flying, even as a private pilot, for the duration of the war. On May 10th, 1941, Hess made his dramatic flight to Scott.
