The only way really to defeat would destroy a Japanese trench was by using artillery fire to expose it. In the early 1944 by May 1944, that was the only way the Japanese bunkers were cleared. Once the second division turned up, the battle would only actually go one way. The rain by this time was coming down. It's very hard to identify where the Japanese trenches were. They would fight the last man. I mean, Slim mentions this repeatedly said, you know, all armies talk about fighting to the last man in his experience. And then the army in the world that only that ever did it and that was the Japanese.
