There was every sign that china was moving, if ever so slowly and and ever so indirectly, towards a more liberal, tolerant society founded on respect for the individual. There were certainly signs that there that there was an interest in building the rule of law, reinforcing rights, a liberalizing society. And i don't know that either you or me will have very strong views about how the current debate is a thinking about that period of time. I think there's a lotof exity to it, and i obviously welave views, but i don’t know that either one of us is a flame thrower on either side of the debate.
