I found there's nothing that flows faster than fiction when you're writing. That's sculpting as much as anything else, isn't it? Absolutely right. I spent years gathering the stories of people who worked in the Civil Rights Movement in this one small town in a six month period in 1962, 61. And when I had enough of those stories, I felt like, okay, I can write a fictionalized version of this story because all of this stuff is true. Well, Freedom Song was exactly that.
