As a code newbie, the idea that my code needs to be tested just didn't really intuitively make sense to me. The tests wound up being a concrete example of what the code actually needed to do. One place for automated testing is to make concrete that gap between your knowledge as the developer and your customer's knowledge or your domain expert's knowledge.
