The Loss of Agency
The choice of ending feels like it is capitalizing on what the negative lesson we see for the series from Kathleen and from Bill and Frank. It's a loss of agency because even though Joel seems like he's the one person making decisions, he's not. And that loss of agency to me is what happens when love takes over. You're now being driven by something else that supersedes your morality, your rationality, your agency. "It's so sad to me. It's just sad"
