The Effects of Snowden's Encryption on Consumer Trust
Mugi: I think there is a lot of evidence that the disclosure of these surveillance programs has had chilling effects in societies around the world and increased self-censorship behaviors among people. One study, for example, found that the smaller revelations in June 2013 led to a 5% reduction in Google search terms used that were deemed either personally sensitive or government sensitive. Another study by John Penny of the Harvard-Bergman Center found that internet users were less likely to view Wikipedia articles that had privacy sensitive content.
