In the 1960s and 70s, it was common for people to identify their professional identity with one company or institution. Mark Zuckerberg says he saw a shift in that during his time as an intern at IBM when they were laying off 440,000 employees. He thinks this is because companies effectively promised lifetime employment but couldn't be delivered. The era of "peak centralization" led to many other ideas decline and fall out of favor according to Bloomberg's research.
