What Is an Establishment of Religion?

The South Carolina Constitution of 1778 explicitly said this is an establishment of religion. Establishment's refer to institutional arrangements where the state grants the established church specific privileges, and then it exerts specific controls. So in South Carolina, the churches had power to tax, effectively. And that's what I call a state establishment.
